چکیده

1.1 Definition of Biomedical Engineering Biomedical engineering (BME) has been defined [1] as a discipline that advances knowledge in engineering, biology and medicine and improves human health through cross-disciplinary activities that integrate the engineering sciences with the biomedical science and clinical practice. Biomedical engineering studies the human body and other living systems from the perspective of engineering. It uses engineering concepts to appreciate how living system works and applies them for the development of devices and processes that Afr J Biomed Eng & Sc, 2009, 1, 5 10 5

Determining the Proper compression Algorithm for Biomedical Signals and Design of an Optimum Graphic System to Display Them (TECHNICAL NOTES)

In this paper the need for employing a data reduction algorithm in using digital graphic systems to display biomedical signals is firstly addressed and then, some such algorithms are compared from different points of view (such as complexity, real time feasibility, etc.). Subsequently, it is concluded that Turning Point algorithm can be a suitable one for real time implementation on a microproc...

Design an Equivalent Left Ventricular Assist Device for Medical Equipment Labs

LVAD is a mechanical pump supporting a weak heart function and blood flow. Sometimes, the heart may not recover fast enough to take over the pumping action immediately after surgery, in such patients a temporary support device has been employed to maintain the pumping action until the patient’s own heart recovers. This device can be considered as a temporary alternative before the process of ar...

The work of a woman is to give birth to children: cultural constructions of infertility in Nigeria.

Infertility is a condition loaded with meaning spanning across biomedical, psychological, social, economic, cultural and religious spheres. Given its disruptive power over women's lives, it provides a unique lens through which issues of kinship, gender, sexuality, cosmology and religion can be examined. The paper presents the results of an ethnographic study of infertility in Central Nigeria. E...

Characterization of Nd: Yag Laser Radiation Effects on Ti6Al4V Physico-Chemical Properties: An In Vivo Study

The effect of a Nd: YAG laser (1064 nm) has been studied on Ti6Al4V alloy in terms of optical and physical parameters for biomedical applications. The superior surface microhardness hardness (i.e. 377 VHN) is attributed to grain refinement associated with laser melting and rapid solidification. The electrochemical property, mainly pitting corrosion resistance, has been carried out in Hanks salt...

Teaching from classic papers: Hill's model of muscle contraction.

A. V. Hill's 1938 paper "The heat of shortening and the dynamic constants of muscle" is an enduring classic, presenting detailed methods, meticulous experiments, and the model of muscle contraction that now bears Hill's name. Pairing a simulation based on Hill's model with a reading of his paper allows students to follow his thought process to discover key principles of muscle physiology and ga...
